In Romania, recent polls indicate that the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) holds the third position, positioning it as the primary opposition party, as the top two parties, PSD and PNL, have formed a coalition since 2021. Originating during the 2018 referendum debate on redefining the family, AUR has grown, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, employing a discourse that incorporates nationalist, religious, and traditional family elements. This paper seeks to analyze the discursive elements employed by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party, utilizing a Gramscian approach. In a year marked by European, local, general, and presidential elections, understanding how this party is shaping a new common sense to counter the existing hegemony is crucial, as the common sense plays and important role in the functioning of democracy. The appearance of populism has been related to a crisis in society, based on economic, such as unemployment (Algan et al, 2018), or political reasons, e.g. distrust in the decisions made by the elites, such as those of the European Union. At the same time, researchers such as Moffitt (2016) have considered that Populism can lead to provoking various crises. Populist leaders and parties offer an alternative to mainstream politics, and this is why they can be of various orientations, such as left or right. Populist leaders and parties can be seen as an adaptation to the individualist or subculture trends in society, since they address the needs of certain communities which are against the mainstream politics, or feel excluded by them. Society has found various means of preventing violent social rebellions under the form of allowing protests where citizens express themselves, as well as populist leaders and parties, as if to ensure stability in society. Yet, does this happen in all cases? Is Populism a means of ensuring stability in society or a means of creating itself social unrest? The paper will give examples from various countries.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Keywords: individualism, mainstream, minority, communities, values</span></span></span></p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-paper-upload field--type-file field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Paper upload</div> <div class="field__item"> <span class="file file--mime-application-vnd-openxmlformats-officedocument-wordprocessingml-document file--x-office-document"> <a href="http://conference.academos.ro/sites/default/files/submission/AnaDrobot/Academos%20full%20paper%20Drobot2024.docx" type="application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document; length=52141" title="Academos full paper Drobot2024.docx">Full paper Irina-Ana Drobot for Academos 2024</a></span> </div> </div> Thu, 04 Apr 2024 15:49:02 +0000 AnaDrobot 1458 at http://conference.academos.ro Towards a new common sense? Drawing upon interdisciplinary perspectives from sociology, political science, and cultural studies, this research examines how apocalyptic visions of societal collapse and millenarian hopes for a utopian future intertwine and manifest within populist discourse. Through an analysis of historical and contemporary examples, including political speeches, media representations, and online communities, this study elucidates how populist leaders and movements employ apocalyptic rhetoric to galvanize support, mobilize followers, and construct collective identities. Moreover, it investigates the ways in which apocalyptic aspirations are utilized within populist narratives to promise transformative change and mobilize grassroots activism. By scrutinizing the ideological underpinnings and rhetorical strategies employed by populist actors, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the intersection between apocalyptic anxieties, millenarian visions, and populist politics in contemporary society. Additionally, it sheds light on the implications of these narratives for democratic governance, social cohesion, and political participation, offering insights into the dynamics of power, authority, and resistance within populist movements.</span></span></span></p> <p> </p> <p><span lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB"><span><span>Keywords: Apocalyptic narratives, Millenarianism, Populist ideologies, Political discourse, Social movements, Rhetoric</span></span></span></p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-paper-upload field--type-file field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Paper upload</div> <div class="field__item"> <span class="file file--mime-application-vnd-openxmlformats-officedocument-wordprocessingml-document file--x-office-document"> <a href="http://conference.academos.ro/sites/default/files/submission/Adrian%20Ioan%20Popovici/Adrian%20Popovici%20Academos%202024.docx" type="application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document; length=51221">Adrian Popovici Academos 2024.docx</a></span> </div> </div> Thu, 29 Feb 2024 20:41:19 +0000 Adrian Ioan Popovici 1451 at http://conference.academos.ro Women Executive Leadership and the COVID-19 Pandemic. Neither are his analyses on the post-communist transition. So far, Popescu’s political thought was not systematically investigated within scientific endeavors. Moreover, it tended to be overlooked or, best case scenario, considered a sort of appendix of his impressive body of literary works and journals. The main stake of this article is to present and critically discuss how Popescu’s national-communism evolved during the 1970s and 1980s and how it endured and recalibrated itself in the first decades after the 1989 anticommunist revolution within a new ideological framework, that of overtly predatory capitalism bent on primitive accumulation despite all costs. It does so by analyzing Popescu’s ideas of personality cult, social class and youth, all of them representative for the official socialist discourse. Interestingly enough, youth can be interpreted, in Popescu’s political thought, as a form of incipient civil society. However, after 1989, this insight is gradually abandoned, as the capitalist transition with its anticommunist and pro-market ideology become dominant. </p> <p> </p> <p>Key-words: ideology, national-communism, transition, capitalism, civil society. </p></div> </div> Mon, 12 Feb 2024 07:09:48 +0000 eugen.gabor 1414 at http://conference.academos.ro Totem and Taboo: Religious Features of the British Public Support for Monarchy http://conference.academos.ro/node/1389 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Totem and Taboo: Religious Features of the British Public Support for Monarchy </span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/36" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">brindusa_palade</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Wed, 01/24/2024 - 16:36</span> <div class="field field--name-field-registration-fee-details field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Registration fee details</div> <div class="field__item">Non-student author</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-persoana-gen field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Author addressing title</div> <div class="field__item">Ms.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-first-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">First Name</div> <div class="field__item">Brindusa</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-last-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Last Name</div> <div class="field__item">Palade</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-academic-title field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Academic title</div> <div class="field__item">Other</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-addresa-persoana field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Address</div> <div class="field__item">National School of Political and Administrative Studies <br /> Bd Expozitiei 30A Bucharest 012244 </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-email-persoana field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">E-mail</div> <div class="field__item">btpalade@gmail.com </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telefon-persoana field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Phone</div> <div class="field__item">0730078689</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-university field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Institution/University</div> <div class="field__item">National School of Political and Administrative Studies </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-conference-panels field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Conference Panels</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/panel-6" hreflang="en">Reshaping political ideologies</a></div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-paper-abstract-submission field--type-text-with-summary field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Paper/Abstract submission</div> <div class="field__item"><p dir="ltr"><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>As Christopher Hitchens remarked in his book about the British monarchy, the cult of the Windsor family, with its periodic rituals and the fetishizing of the most senior royals resembles a secular religion. The British monarchy is surrounded by secrecy, as many actions of the sovereign and senior royals, including those having a public or political impact are not transparent, nor are most records from the royal archives available to the public or to historians. This paper will first examine the religious features of the public support for the British monarchy. Then, it will advance a hypothetical explanation of the enduring nature of this institution through its mysterious/religious nature. It will also consider the fact that in recent decades the image of the Windsor family has been harmed by numerous scandals related to adultery, divorce, sexual abuse and even racism. Notwithstanding this ignominious behavior, the royal mystique has been preserved with the aid of a press that seems profitably interested in rousing public devotion to the monarch and in demonizing scapegoats. The pro-establishment media, including the tabloids that combine the sacred with the profane, is thus similar to a secular clergy. Republican dissenters who advocate the abolition of monarchy play the role of heretics. They are often persecuted, arrested and derided. There is also the "religiously indifferent" population that is uninterested in the Royal Family. British "public religion" is thus a peculiar kind of pre-modern cult that strangely survived the Enlightenment and the challenges of liberal democracy. Such values are promoted within civil society especially by the British pressure group Republic, whose campaign for changing the form of government has gained more visibility and support in recent years. </strong></p> <p> </p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-paper-upload field--type-file field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Paper upload</div> <div class="field__item"> <span class="file file--mime-application-vnd-openxmlformats-officedocument-wordprocessingml-document file--x-office-document"> <a href="http://conference.academos.ro/sites/default/files/submission/brindusa_palade/Palade_Totem_and_Taboo_Academos_2024.docx" type="application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document; length=41872">Palade_Totem_and_Taboo_Academos_2024.docx</a></span> </div> </div> Wed, 24 Jan 2024 14:36:27 +0000 brindusa_palade 1389 at http://conference.academos.ro The Roles of Populism: Stability or Threat to Society? http://conference.academos.ro/node/1339 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">The Roles of Populism: Stability or Threat to Society?</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/32" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">AnaDrobot</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 01/01/2024 - 21:44</span> <div class="field field--name-field-registration-fee-details field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Registration fee details</div> <div class="field__item">Non-student author</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-persoana-gen field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Author addressing title</div> <div class="field__item">Ms.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-first-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">First Name</div> <div class="field__item">Irina-Ana</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-last-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Last Name</div> <div class="field__item">Drobot</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-academic-title field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Academic title</div> <div class="field__item">Dr.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-addresa-persoana field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Address</div> <div class="field__item">Bulevardul Lacul Tei 124, București 020396</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-email-persoana field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">E-mail</div> <div class="field__item">anadrobot@yahoo.com</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telefon-persoana field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Phone</div> <div class="field__item">0746141649</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-university field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Institution/University</div> <div class="field__item">Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest, Faculty of Engineering in Foreign Languages, Department of Foreign Languages and Communication</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-conference-panels field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Conference Panels</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/panel-6" hreflang="en">Reshaping political ideologies</a></div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-paper-abstract-submission field--type-text-with-summary field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Paper/Abstract submission</div> <div class="field__item"><p><span><span><span>The purpose of the present paper is to understand what roles Populism can have, which would explain why it is currently on the rise in the world. The paper will give examples from various countries.</span></span></span></p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-paper-upload field--type-file field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Paper upload</div> <div class="field__item"> <span class="file file--mime-application-vnd-openxmlformats-officedocument-wordprocessingml-document file--x-office-document"> <a href="http://conference.academos.ro/sites/default/files/submission/AnaDrobot/Academos%20full%20paper%20Drobot2024_0.docx" type="application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document; length=52141" title="Academos full paper Drobot2024_0.docx">full paper 2024</a></span> </div> </div> Mon, 01 Jan 2024 19:44:07 +0000 AnaDrobot 1339 at http://conference.academos.ro Does Political Ideologies still shape social imaginaries? http://conference.academos.ro/node/961 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Does Political Ideologies still shape social imaginaries?</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/211" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Luís Lóia</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 04/10/2023 - 21:21</span> <div class="field field--name-field-registration-fee-details field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Registration fee details</div> <div class="field__item">Non-student author</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-persoana-gen field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Author addressing title</div> <div class="field__item">Mr.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-first-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">First Name</div> <div class="field__item">Luís</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-last-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Last Name</div> <div class="field__item">Lóia</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-academic-title field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Academic title</div> <div class="field__item">Prof.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-addresa-persoana field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Address</div> <div class="field__item">Universidade Católica Portuguesa<br /> Faculdade de Ciências Humanas<br /> Palma de Cima<br /> 1649-023<br /> Lisboa</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-email-persoana field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">E-mail</div> <div class="field__item">luisloia@ucp.pt</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telefon-persoana field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Phone</div> <div class="field__item">919502777</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-university field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Institution/University</div> <div class="field__item">Universidade Católica Portuguesa</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-conference-panels field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field--entity-reference-target-type-taxonomy-term clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Conference Panels</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/panel-6" hreflang="en">Reshaping political ideologies</a></div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-paper-abstract-submission field--type-text-with-summary field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Paper/Abstract submission</div> <div class="field__item"><p>Political Ideologies are under debate since they were formed in social history, and to understand modern political life we must still pay attention to them. On the other hand, the cosmopolitical appeal of globalisation does not yet provide a global social imaginary that could be recognizable beyond the scope of a post-ideology era, and, as so, presented itself as fragmented as the former.
